CHAPTER 16

K asha opened her eyes, but she was no longer in the room Ionni had given her. Instead, she found herself standing in the middle of a strange corridor. It looked like the reddish-blue stone, the same material making up the palace on Skye. She glanced around. Everything seemed familiar, yet different. She thought she’d seen the small mural of duel moons before, but it wasn’t the corridor where her room was. This one had slight differences, mostly in the placement of the wall scones, and this corridor was shorter than the one where her room was. That one had four doors. This one had only one.

Something on the other side of that door called to her, drew her to it. She might as well have had a puppet master pulling on her strings. Her feet took the steps necessary for her to reach the door. She glanced down and realized her feet were bare. She wiggled her toes, but the floor didn’t feel cool. Odd, dressed as she had been when she’d fallen asleep, in her panties and a cami, she should feel the cold of the corridor. Yet, she wasn’t sleepwalking, though there was a dreamlike quality to everything around her. Even the air going in and out of her lungs didn’t seem quite real. Then it hit her.

She was back in that dreamscape. Was Leonidas hurt again?

Once the thought entered her mind, she knew he was on the other side of that door. He was the one calling to her. He needed her. Without a second thought, she placed her hand over the door handle and turned it, pushing the door open as she did so.

The room was dark, but a single light filtered in from the hallway, and only because the door was open. She could just make out the shape of someone on the bed. Her eyesight had become sharper, even at night. But in this dreamscape she could only penetrate so much of the darkness. Gently, she shut the door behind her. It took her a moment to let her sight adjust to the room.

The windows were open. The cool night air brushed gently across her skin. She glanced out at the sky, but it offered no moon, only unfamiliar stars, to help light the way for her. She didn’t need it though, her senses heightened, and she soon noticed she could see in a sort of muted fashion, like everything appeared filtered through a faded lens. Making her way to the side of the bed, Kasha recognized the features of the man who lay on his side. He wore no shirt, and the cover rested just at his waist, but she could already tell from his outline. He was naked beneath the sheets.

She bent slightly to get closer to him, to make sure he was really okay, and he didn’t need her help, as he had last time.

His hand suddenly shot out and grasped her around the wrist, yanking her toward him.

The tip of an obsidian claw pressed at her neck before she could get a word out.
